'nuages' is a collaboration between e+i and our friends at nuDance Theater. They asked us to design and build an environment for their dance piece titled "into me see", which is currently on view at the Lab Gallery on 47th and Lexington, nyc.

the interior is mainly inspired by their request for a vaporous/liquid like environment with which they could interact and that would create varying levels of visibility.

we used this script for some testing out some of the gradient density patterns.

this definition takes a triangulated mesh and builds a cone oculus on each face. an adjustable attractor point is created based on the mesh bounding box. the extrusion height and opening sizes of the cones are based on the distance from each face to the attractor point.

the base geometry here was cut out from one of the earlier isosurf mesh tests. two of the each triangle edge is piped with a constant thin member and a thicker member related to the highest pt of the bounding box. it has a "modulus" component in the stream, so they end up looking kind of random. anyways, the plan is to contour this network of variably thickned pipes and feed it back through isosurf..

These are some isosurfacing tests brought into rhino for use as a base geometry in grasshopper.

The seed images were generated in Processing from a simple sketch that captures some grey scale images and then compiling that series of images with IsoSurf to extract various meshes.

well i haven't had much time to post anything in a while, but i did get a chance today to get back to some experimenting. i wrote this script which uses the mesh counterpart of a nurbs surface to populate and scale a set of objects. it orients the objects using the mesh edges as alignment targets. (note that a mesh with many excessive polygons will slow things down.) it's a pretty simple procedure, but it may be more interesting to use it to set up a scaffold for something more complex..

these are some tests to scale down and split some surfaces based on their z value. the higher the surface the smaller the offset, while the overall range is the bounding box of all selected items.

this is still a very buggy work in progress, trying to get a recursive subdivision based on distance to a point. Also included are limits on the number of generations, and a shortening of the test distance.. currently at the end the script just dies, and i haven't quite worked it out.. if you're able to please let me know.

generally the best field to run the script on is a grid of quads, as the splitting function is based on the middle UV, so odd shapes don't always work..

this script populates a surface, based on the UV, with 3 components. A dome is component 1 and occurs at all points, components 2 and 3 are scaled down domes that orient to their respective attractor points. There is also a range of influence for each attractor, allowing for the overlap of components.

the upcoming V2.0 will have the option of populating custom components.

this is a rough iterative script that takes a number of seed points and based on a given minimum distance, will create a new point and string a 3 degree curve between points.
it tries to simulate catenary curves. can produce hanging strings by entering a negative z value, or arches by entering a positive z value.

i modelled a quick laptop stand which i plan to make out of laser cut mat board, and have been trying out a laser cutter helper. Currently the script create the contours via the "intersect" command (and not contour), groups the resulting curves, numbers them, and layout them out in a row.

variable apertures created in GC. a surface is populated on both sides of the surface with 2 different components, each with an assigned behaviour in relation to a sun vector. top component is a hex lofted to a circle, whose radius get smaller when aligned with the sun. the bottom component joins 3 of the hex edges and appears once the sun angle deviates past a given threshold. thanks to stephen mueller for writing the gc code. completed at gsapp '05 material potency workshop.

2. each surface is lofted with an aperture
3. height of extrusion is based on the surface's longest length
4. scale of aperture is based on the deviation between the surface normal and the sun vector
(the closer the surface normal and sun vector are aligned, the smaller the aperture.)
